Why WALD? — The Science of Ultimate Comfort

Tired of cold, hot, or moldy houses in Japan? Discover how WALD uses European Building Physics, sd-value standards, and radiant cooling to design the ultimate healthy home for your family.

Why WALD? — The Science of Ultimate Comfort

For many expats living in Japan, the standard of housing can be a major source of frustration. Despite Japan’s reputation for high technology, traditional modern houses here often suffer from extreme seasonal temperatures, draftiness, and hidden mold.

At WALD, we build differently. We don’t rely on generic marketing or aesthetic concepts; we rely on Building Physics. Inspired by European engineering and the groundbreaking research of experts like Neil May and Prof. Masanori Shukuya, we design homes that maintain perfect equilibrium with nature, offering your family the ultimate in health, longevity, and comfort. Here is the science behind why a WALD home feels fundamentally different.

1. Smart Moisture Control: No Mold, No Rot

The Physics of Vapour Permeability and the “sd-value”

Many Japanese builders rely on a “hermetically sealed” approach—lining the interior of the wall structure with plastic vapour barriers and layering insulation and synthetic plywood on the exterior to protect the frame. However, when this plastic layer inevitably fails due to aging, micro-cracks, or structural settling, moisture becomes trapped inside the wall cavity. This trapped moisture is the root cause of structural rot and hazardous black mold. At WALD, we implement a precisely calculated Vapour Gradient based on the global standard metric, the “sd-value” (Equivalent Air Layer Thickness).

  • The Indoor “Brake” (OSB Board / sd-value: 2–3m): Instead of suffocating the house in plastic sheets, we use PAVATEX-recommended OSB on the inside. It acts as a smart brake, regulating the exact amount of moisture entering the wall cavity.
  • The Outdoor “Exhaust” (PAVATEX Wood Fibre Board / sd-value: 0.1–0.2m): On the outside, we insulate with premium Swiss PAVATEX wood fibre boards. Moisture flows effortlessly from the inside out, like water down a slide.

Because the path out (exterior) is always significantly wider than the path in (interior), the inside of your walls stays completely dry forever. No trapped moisture, no rot, and no mold.

2. Defeating the Summer Heat: Heavy Insulation

Thermal Mass and the 12-Hour “Phase Shift”

Most builders will show you a low “U-value” (thermal transmittance) and claim their houses are cool in summer. This is only a half-truth, as U-values only measure static heat transfer. In the scorching Japanese summer, the real enemy is dynamic solar radiation, which heats roof surfaces up to 70°C.

Lightweight insulation materials like fibreglass have virtually no Thermal Mass (heat storage capacity). They allow the heat pulse to travel straight through to your ceilings by mid-afternoon, forcing your air conditioning to work overtime.

WALD uses high-density PAVATEX wood fibre insulation. Because it consists of densely compressed natural wood, it possesses massive thermal mass, creating a Phase Shift (Phase Delay) of 10 to 12 hours.

The intense heat absorbed by your roof at 2:00 PM is held back by the PAVATEX barrier. By the time that heat wave finally reaches the interior, it is 2:00 AM—the outdoor air has already cooled down, allowing the heat to naturally dissipate back outside.

As a result, even on a 35°C afternoon, the influx of heat into the living space is significantly mitigated, effectively preventing indoor temperature spikes and maintaining a stable, comfortable climate.

3. Pure Thermal Comfort: Windless, Silent, and Odourless

Radiant Cooling/Heating and Human Exergy

Conventional air conditioners cool you down by blowing cold air. This creates uneven temperature zones, kicks up dust, and causes the infamous “AC fatigue.” Furthermore, when air or heating elements exceed 52.5°C, organic dust particles in the air undergo thermal decomposition (Staubverschwelung), which irritates human mucous membranes and causes a dry, scratchy throat.

WALD eliminates the need for forced-air systems by installing PS Radiant Heating and Cooling Systems. Instead of blowing air, the PS system circulates chilled water (approx. 15°C in summer) or warm water (approx. 35°C in winter) through quiet radiant panels. It cools or warms the surrounding surface temperatures (walls, floor, ceiling) rather than just the air. According to the Exergy Theory by Japan’s leading environmental scientist, Prof. Masanori Shukuya, radiant cooling reduces human “body exergy consumption” by 25% compared to standard air conditioning. Because your body doesn’t have to fight to regulate its temperature against cold drafts or hot walls, your nervous system can truly relax.

Experience the luxury of true comfort: No drafts, no dust, no noise, and no dry throat.
